Estelle's letter to her readers:
the wrong side of kai
The Wrong Side of Kai begins with a brief, late-night moment of teenage desire – and foolishness. (We’ve all been to those parties where we do impulsive things that come back to haunt us . . .) I wanted to write a love story – the best kind of story, right? – but one which starts with an unusual connection between two people, one sparked by a longing for revenge. It’s a longing with consequences that get out of hand, but for my heroine Vanessa it also helps her mend her broken heart and reconnect with her father who’s adrift on a sea of his own grief.
I feel I know Vanessa so well now: she’s a teenage girl who deals with loss by acting out, desperate for the security of boundaries. She has a brilliant friend in sweet-natured Chyna, but for Vanessa romance, relationships and the vulnerability that comes with them are off-limits. Until she meets Kai – cute, curly-haired, an enigma – and together they hatch a plan to mess with a boy who should have known better than to mess with Vanessa . . . The Wrong Side of Kai is about those snap decisions that threaten to define us, about finding your feet when life knocks you down, about learning to trust, hope and being true to yourself. But for me, it’s truly about love – the love friends have for one another, the love within families, and the breath-taking exhilaration of falling in love. I hope you enjoy Vanessa’s story in The Wrong Side of Kai. I’ve had the best time writing it and I hope you have the best time reading it. Please let me know! #TheWrongSideofKai |
